The Hagia Maria Sion Foundation

MauerEnlarge picture The unique geopolitical and religious location of our Abbey contributes already to the calling and the task of working for peace and reconciliation among peoples. Our life as Benedictine monks on Mount Zion and especially our engagement in the social, cultural, academic and ecumenical areas is inspired by the words of the Psalm: “Seek peace and pursue it."

Our “Beit Benedict” Project

How Beit Benedict should some day look .How Beit Benedict should some day look . (Enlarge picture) This work receives a special focus in the Beit Benedict project. On a separate piece of land close to our study house Beit Josef an additional building is projected that would provide additional space for these activities with rooms for meetings and lodging for participants.

To provide a financial basis for this and also especially for the case of political or economic crisis, in May 2001 the Abbot Primate, Dr. Notker Wolf OSB, Abbot Benedikt M. Lindemann OSB (Dormition Abbey), and the then presidents of the Austrian, Swiss, Bavarian, St. Ottilien, and Beuronese Congregations founded the non-profit ecclesiastical foundation “Hagia Maria Sion” in Mainz under the patronage of the chairman of the German Bishops Conference. “The purpose of the foundation is the erection of the Peace Academy Beit Benedict in Jerusalem, its building and maintenance as well as the provision for the programming of the work of the Academy. The monastic life and the monastic community of the Benedictine Abbey of Dormition should thereby be supported and assured” (Prologue to the By-laws of the Foundation).
