Abtei Hagia Maria Sion, Jerusalem

Dormition Abbey - Our Community in Jerusalem

The buildings of Dormition Abbey are located on Mount Zion, to the south of the Old City. Here was the place of the Last Supper, here was the first center of the young church. In a special way, this place is connected to the blessed virgin Mary, who, according to old christian tradition, lived and died here.

The ground was acquired by the german emperor Wilhelm II. and given to the German Holy Land Society (Deutscher Verein vom Heiligen Land) for the benefit of german catholics. So it was possible to set up a german benedictine monastery on Mt. Zion. In 1906, the first group of monks arrived; in 1910, the church was consecrated.

As our service for the church and all the people we are taking care or this holy place and are attending guests and pilgrims; we are working for peace and reconciliation. We also offer a ecumenical study program for german-speaking students of theology.

All this is based on our monastic life; we regard the praise of God in our liturgy and our prayer for peace as our most important task.
